Benchmade Torrent 890

The Benchmade Torrent 890 employs a thumb-stud opener that along with the Nitrous assist opening mechanism gives wielders quick and reliable deployment.

Benchmade Torrent

Blade Length: 3.6 in (9.14 cm)
Closed Length: 4.6 in (11.68 cm)
Open Overall Length: 8.2 in (20.83 cm)

The Torrent is available with a plain edge or the ComboEdge (partially serrated) in either a satin or black finish. The Torrent is a locking-liner knife in Benchmade’s Blue class, and it has a tip-down carry clip. In both finishes, the grip uses a wood grain style, and both blade styles in the black finish tend to carry a slight premium over the two without.

Benchmade has earned a reputation for quality, and the Torrent 890 is a quality knife. However, the general feeling among post-purchase reviews is that the knife just doesn’t offer enough at this price level. In other words, customers feel as if they could have gotten better value out of a model made by a brand without the Benchmade cachet. One issue with the knife occurs when the user releases the lock in the wrong orientation. The blade will fall out all the way around from about 60 degrees to the lock point. One of the benefits of this knife is that it releases the blade with authority, which is especially useful for those with limited mobility.

Unless limited mobility is an issue for the prospective buyer, we’d focus our shopping energies elsewhere. If a consumer is willing to spend at this price point for a knife, he or she can purchase one without these limitations and with assisted opening force that is nearly as great. If a consumer does opt for this blade, it would be wise to keep it out of the hands of children since it requires a bit more awareness than most knives.
